F sounds typically develops between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 years of age for both boys and girls. I often work with children on the F sound starting at 3 years of age or sooner if the trouble is causing them to be harder to understand and especially if it is causing them frustration.
As a parent I would work on my child’s awareness and development of all sounds as early as possible. Providing children with awareness of sounds helps the sounds to develop. Awareness of speech sounds is closely linked to good early reading and writing skills – phonological awareness. Having clear speech also helps children to develop their language and social communication to their fullest potential.
This guide will help parents decide if they need to work on F sounds by completing a simple assessment. Included are step-by-step ideas to help get the F sound started, Indirect Therapy, Direct Therapy, Games and 96 printable Picture Cards for working on F at the start of words, middle and ends of words.
Working on F sounds is often fairly easy and straightforward and if the right steps are followed it is something that can be done at home in just a few minutes each day.
