Tool #1 Rhyming Sets / Word Families Rhyming is the foundation of phonological awareness. You need to be able to listen to and discriminate sounds to be able to do the more advanced skills. Literacy is built on listening and speaking. In addition to helping with recognizing and producing rhymes, rhyming sets and word families are a great tool to learn how to manipulate sounds in words to change one word to another.
